Is elbow pain keeping you from the things you love?

Elbow injuries and wear and tear to the tendons (tennis and golfer’s elbow) can be debilitating and life-changing. Are conservative measures such as physical therapy, bracing, medications, and cortisone not providing much relief? Perhaps the risk, cost, and recovery time of traditional orthopedic surgeries have you hesitating to move forward. Thankfully, Motus has an alternative with elbow PRP treatments in Kansas City for your tennis and golfer’s elbow, partial ligament tears, arthritis, cubital tunnel syndrome or radial tunnel syndrome (nerve pain), and bursitis.

PRP has been gaining a lot of publicity in the past few years with its use by professional athletes such as Tiger Woods, Alex Rodriguez, Hines Ward, and Troy Polamalu. The good news is that you don’t need to be an athlete to use it.

How is elbow PRP treatments different from cortisone?

PRP isn’t like cortisone. Cortisone (also known as corticosteroid) is a steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is injected into structures such as the rotator cuff tendons or bursa to help reduce inflammation and pain. This is temporary, however, and it is a long-standing knowledge that repetitive injections can deteriorate these structures (and the underlying bone) and lead to further damage over time.

According to a New York Times article, overall, people who received cortisone shots had a much lower rate of full recovery than those who did nothing or who underwent physical therapy. Further, patients with tendinosis are not really suffering from inflammation so these medications are not particularly effective.

PRP works by recruiting the body’s own healing components to the area of disease. These “repairmen” live in your blood every day in a diluted form but are unable to get where they need to be due to lack of blood flow. At Motus, we collect your blood and concentrate these growth factors. We then use an ultrasound machine to inject PRP back into the precise areas that causing your pain. This isn’t putting a band-aid on the pain like cortisone; it’s fixing the problem by growing and fixing the tissue.

How is elbow PRP treatments different from surgery?

Motus is growing tissue. Traditional surgical methods aim to remove or “clean-out” (also known as debride) damaged and dead tissues such as tendon or cartilage. Some of these surgeries involve releasing (cutting) or re-anchoring tendons. These procedures are performed in an operating room under anesthesia and are typically followed by a period of immobilization. The painful post-operative period often requires time off of work and activity. There are many research studies investigating whether the use of certain preparations of PRP can help lessen the downtime following these surgeries.

For those patients desiring more traditional methods of removing diseased tissue, we offer a less invasive alternative to surgery known as Tenex.
